About the University

Harran University was established in 1992. The university, which developed in the following years, continues its activities with 14 Faculties, 4 Schools, 1 State Conservatory, 13 Vocational Schools, 3 Institutes, 15 Research and Application Centres.

Sanliurfa, where Harran University is located, is one of the oldest cities in Anatolia with a history dating back eleven thousand years from today. Located in the region called the ‘Fertile Crescent’ in archaeological sources, Şanlıurfa has a vast cultural accumulation since it is located at the intersection of rich Anatolian culture and Mesopotamian culture. The historical city of Harran, which gave its name to the university, is 44 km from Şanlıurfa. It is a city center located in the southeast, which has witnessed important events in history. The main importance of Harran stems from its being an important science centre since pre-Islam. Important studies were carried out in the fields of astronomy, medicine, mathematics, philosophy, and religion in the Harran School, which was considered the university of its period. Harran continues to attract attention today as a tourism destination.  

Another feature of Şanlıurfa is that it is located at the center of the South-eastern Anatolia Project (GAP), one of the largest integrated regional development projects in the world. Şanlıurfa will gain significant gains once this project is fully implemented. Our University to upgrade the standards of higher education and scientific research in Turkey also aims at the same time plays an extremely important mission in the success of the GAP. Elements of this mission are pioneering social and cultural change, supporting regional development through scientific studies, and creating a platform that allows rational evaluation of regional dynamics.

Harran University has 3 campuses, 421 programs, 27 thousand students, and 1250 academic staff. The library, which has 4 floors and a closed area of ​​7900 m², includes a conference hall, reader rooms, collection rooms, internet rooms, group study rooms, cafeteria, and administrative service rooms. The library serves 1000 people at the same time.

Social and Cultural Activities aim to contribute to the personality development and socialization of students by ensuring their participation in cultural activities. Conferences, panels, symposiums, concerts, and festivals on various topics are organized throughout the year. The spring festival, which is traditionally held every year, especially at the university, allows the local people as well as the students to orient with the university. Sports activities are organized to make use of the students’ time outside the classroom and to help them develop and maintain a balanced body and mental health. Harran University has 58 student clubs. There are sports fields and a swimming pool at the university.
