Today a professional field in its own right, translation requires expertise in intercultural communication and a keen awareness of and knowledge about different cultures, as well as competence in the latest technologies employed in this field. Our department, which provides education in 5 different languages (German, Arabic, Chinese, English, and Russian) fosters the development of students as they train to become experts of culture and communication, with each student progressing according to his or her own particular interests and proclivities. We aim to provide our students with the knowledge and skills they will need after graduation, making it possible for them to draw upon theoretical models as they become effective practitioners of translation. The modular program that we implement in all divisions of our department includes not only theoretical courses seeking to instill in students a holistic approach towards translation and the various different fields of translation, but applied courses introducing the practice of written and oral translation as well. Apart from these, seeing as translation and communication experts necessarily work in different cultures and fields, our program includes general classes such as comparative cultural studies, history of culture and thought, and international communication, as well as courses focusing upon other areas of expertise, such as tourism, law, economy, and the media, in which we expect our students to specialize. Due to the highly competitive working conditions of today’s world, translators are expected to have a thorough knowledge of at least two foreign languages and cultures. For this reason, one of our department’s objectives is to ensure that our students become familiar with a second foreign language and culture, completing relevant courses up to and including the advanced level. However, our program has been designed so as to make it possible for students to learn even more foreign languages, if they so desire. Translation studies is a young, burgeoning discipline, and as a department of this discipline, we strive to do the following: to draw attention to the existence of differentiating aspects of the act of translation and communication, to contribute to studies which help to enlighten the complex nature of the act of translation, and to instill students with awareness of the transformation that written and oral texts undergo in the process of their transfer between different cultures or areas of expertise. Our ultimate aim, however, is to produce by means of scholarly research up-to-date data which serves to enrich the education that we provide.
