In our International Trade and Business (English) department, professional courses related to every field of international trade are provided in line with basic courses such as economics, business, law, business mathematics and statistics. Professional courses are placed in the four year program in a harmonized manner. Students who have completed the five-year program together with the preparatory class will be able to gain necessary skill to join in all institutions with international economic relations, mainly foreign trade companies.

The international business environment differs from the domestic business in many respects. The differences arise predominantly in marketing and sales management, purchasing management, financial management and general operational management. In addition, international business environments are changing faster than national business environments. Inflation in country A, devaluation in country B, change in tariffs in country C, sanction decisions against country D and many more are among the issues that foreign trade managers at all levels must take into consideration.

Our curriculum is designed so as to transfer necessary skills to the students who will participate in the decision making process and manage transactions in international business environments that are constantly changing. In addition, we are in an effort to keep our curriculum, course contents and presentation styles of courses constantly updated. We adapt the teaching techniques such as virtual reality and e-learning, which transfer large-sized information in a short time to the students. Our lessons are taught by our expert academics, who often have private sector experience or an economic bureaucracy background.

The language of international trade is English in this age. Almost all international business communications and contracts are carried out and conducted in English. Follow-up of the literature, happenings in target markets and the multilateral trade system require an advanced academic level as well as an advanced language and international business culture. Therefore, we start the education in English from the beginning of the academic year 2020-2021. Students enrolled in our department in previous years will be able to complete their education, subject to the curriculum of the semester they enrolled.

Message of the head of Department

Dear Students,

While only approximately 13 percent of world output was subject to international trade in the beginning of 1970s, this rate reached at about 30 percent today. This means that international trade is grooving more rapidly than national economies’ domestic production and trade. Turkey has joined this process since 1980s, sometime performing parallel to the world, sometime exceeding it. The rapid increase in trade drag the services which we denominate as trade services such as international banking, logistics, insurance, trade surveying and customs brokerage as well. Even though this long term trend was cut off for short periods of time, depending on events such as economic and economy political crises or pandemics such as Covid 19, there is no doubt that over performance of international trade will continue during the next decades as well.

The increase in international trade and demand for trade dependent services have always increased qualified workers demand. Job opportunities in international trade sectors are increasing faster than job opportunities in domestic oriented sectors. There has always been a qualified workers gap in foreign trade and trade services sector both in the world and especially in Turkey. The salaries of qualified international trade workers are generally higher than the salaries of workers who employed in domestic oriented industries both in Turkey and in the world. Besides, the wage gaps could be higher among executive job levels.

The international business owners constitute a quite different segment of most societies. In order to become competitive in international arena, they have to be more educated, more analyzer, fast decider, more innovative, more tolerant, conciliatory and so on. Whether some of these perfection could be gained by living in such a society, most could be learned during university education. Without grasping global trading system, international marketing, international finance, international trade operation management skills and necessary business language skill, it is almost impossible to step into international business community.

With its esteemed academic team and modern education understanding, Haliç University International Business and Management Section exist for your career.
