Today, information and communication tools are used more widely than they were in the past. Therefore, job opportunities are more varied. Civil engineering is one of the most in demand jobs. Civil engineering as an occupation has a very special position in Turkey. Nationally, civil engineering departments enrolled the best students from the 1950s to the middle of the 1970s. These graduates became the employees of many Turkish civil engineering firms. As a result, Turkish civil construction companies were able to sign a large number of contracts, subsequently performing successfully in projects in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. These large construction companies required Turkish engineers, who were well educated and could speak a foreign language (usually English), to be hired in their international projects and construction sites. In summary, the field of civil engineering in Turkey is highly established and internationally recognized. The Civil Engineering Department of Işık University was established in order to respond to this demand. As the program is conducted entirely in English, graduates of our department will have a high chance of taking good positions in the construction industry. Our civil engineering program is designed to be flexible: while we adhere to a strict curriculum of the basics of civil engineering, on the other hand we allow students to specialize in accordance with their interests. In the next years, the most promising branches of civil engineering will likely be structure and transportation. In response to this, the program has many elective courses which allow students to specialize in either structural or transport engineering. The civil engineering program has been prepared in accordance with the strategic vision of Işık University, and has been established to exploit the common overlaps between other departments: i.e., mathematics, electronics, computer sciences, machine and industrial engineering. The program utilizes computer applications, mathematical modeling techniques, scientific simulation, signalization theory and so on. Students in the Civil Engineering Department must carry out eight weeks of practicums in two different semesters. The internships will be performed both in the office and at a construction site. The students will carry out their practicums in the summer seasons of their second and third years of study, once they have received the required basic theory in their classes. Based on the internship reports, faculty members advise students in their career path.
